Do I have to take precautions when wearing a navel ring after I haven't worn one for 4 years?
I got my belly button pierced around 2001 maybe, and wore a ring religiously until about 2006 when I took it out just because I was kind of sick of it and haven't worn one since then. I always thought it closed (even though I could clearly see the hole above my navel...I didn't think a ring would go all the way through). On a whim I just tried to stick a ring through and it took a little work but eventually went all the way through. I think I might start wearing one again, and I'm wondering if I need to take any precautions to avoid it getting infected or if I can pretty much do whatever I want, like an ear piercing. It did feel a little sore after I put a ring in, so I'm also wondering how long that will last.

You should take the same precautions as with a new piercing, but this time it should heal much faster. A little triple antibiotic cream, like Neosprin, is a good way to lubricate the post. Watch for infection and get treatment if necessary. This area is more vulnerable than the ear lobe, more blood supply.
