Where (and when) is the best surf in the South East?

I live in Savannah, GA. I have been body boarding for a little while and would realllly like to pick up surfing. However, since I have been here, i have seen maybe one or two okay waves. I know this part of the US doesn’t get many waves, but there have to be a few gems I don’t know about. Anyone willing to share on good spots in the SC, GA, and N. FLA areas?

Georgia is probably the worst place on the east coast to fibd rieable surf. The position of the continental shelf meeses up the swell there. There are, however, some great spots in South carolina and north Florida. I am from the northeast, I have been driving to South Carolina to Surf in the winter for years. Now, if you intend to become a “surfer” it only fair to tell you that no real surfer is going to give up his/her spots to a stranger on line. Nothing personal, but most of our places are already too crowded, and we only share that information with trusted friends.

Now, if you want to start surfing, no matter where, you need to know that lessons are the best way to start. Lessons can come from a professional instructor, or surfing family members or experienced surfing friends. You have to learn surf etiquette (so the experienced surfers in the line up don’t want to drown you), how to paddle and take off on a wave, and how to ride a wave. The last thing experienced surfers want is for inexperienced people to just grab a board, rush into the surf and get in our way. Lessons shorten the learning curve significantly. And they help keep ignorant, un-prepared kooks out of the water and out of the way of more experienced surfers.
